It’s the number one team in the country and defending national champions this weekend as the Huskies take on Providence in a home and home. The Friars are undefeated so far this season, and actually haven’t lost since the Hockey East Tournament.
Much like Providence teams we’ve seen in the past, this years version sports a great defense, backed with a good goalie. The Friars have only given up 2.22 goals per game and while John Gillies is irreplaceable, Nick Ellis has done a good job in his vacated role. Ellis has a .929 save percentage, behind only the incredible performances from Thatcher Demko and Kevin Boyle on Hockey East.
A big difference in this years team from those in years past is that they’re actually scoring. Providence is putting up 4 goals per game so far this season. Mark Jankowski looks like he’s living up to the hype he had when he first arrived as a freshman. Jake Walman has been incredible, putting up 14 points in nine games. That’s good for fifth in the conference in points and third in points per game, as a defenseman.
Don’t abandon all hope yet. There’s a chance. Providence was winless last weekend against BU. The game before that, the Friars didn’t blow out Colgate as much as they had been dominating teams before that. Providence has also given up half of their goals in the third period, so when Northeastern inevitably finds themselves in a hole there’s at least a chance they might come back.Follow @neuhockey
